FAQ's:
Hawaii State Massage Championship – FAQ
Date: October 11, 2025
Location: Ala Moana Hotel – Carnation Room, Honolulu, OahuHow do I get there?
Fly into Honolulu International Airport (HNL). No rental car is needed. You can take an Uber directly from the airport to the Ala Moana Hotel. Once you're at the hotel, everything you'll need—restaurants, the beach, shopping, and the event itself—is within walking distance.Do I need a car?
No. The venue is centrally located and easy to access by rideshare. We specifically chose Ala Moana Hotel so participants could enjoy a convenient and walkable experience without needing a vehicle. How many categories can I enter?
Each therapist may enter only one category. You will give one massage treatment and receive one treatment, both within the same category. Competitors may not model in the same category they are competing in.How many spots are available?
There are 16 competitor spots available this year. Space is limited, so early registration is highly encouraged. What do I need to bring?
All participants must bring a minimum of two sets of sheets, as well as any tools, oils, or props they plan to use. You are responsible for covering your own massage table, mattress, or chair, and for bringing draping materials for your model. Past participants have brought massage lotions, cupping tools, Gua Sha, singing bowls, lomi sticks, tea to serve the model, flowers, or small tables to display items as part of their presentation. Anything that reflects your style and enhances the client experience is welcome, as long as it fits within the competition guidelines. Each participant will be assigned an 8x8 space and must fit all equipment, supplies, and presentation materials within that area. Will a massage table be provided?
For therapists traveling from out of state or another island, we will do our best to provide a massage table. However, this is not guaranteed. If you require a table, please notify us as soon as possible so we can try to accommodate your request. What should I wear?
Participants often wear comfortable and professional attire such as yoga pants, scrubs, or logo t-shirts. Cultural clothing is also encouraged, especially if it reflects the nature of your work. For Thai massage competitors, shoes are not allowed. The focus is on wearing something that allows you to move freely and present yourself with professionalism. What will I be judged on?
We follow the International Massage Association (IMA) judging standards. Judges will evaluate each performance based on innovation, body mechanics, flow and transitions, client contact, hygiene, draping, and overall impression. What are the massage categories?
You may choose from the following categories:
Swedish Massage (classic Western massage)
Thai Massage / Nuad Thai (includes Warrior, Royal, and Thai Yoga styles; judged by members of the World Association of Nuad Thai & Spa)
Wellness Massage (hot stone, aromatherapy, holistic massage, lymph drainage, etc.)
Free Style Massage (Western Inspired) – a combination of Western techniques, including mobilization, cupping, and massage tools
Free Style Massage (Eastern Inspired) – a combination of Eastern techniques, such as Shiatsu, Tui Na, reflexology, Ayurveda, and cupping
Chair Massage (any style performed in a massage chair)
Sports Massage (includes deep tissue, MFR, MET, neuromuscular work, and stretching)
Facial Massage (techniques like Japanese facelifting, Gua Sha, or classical spa facials)
Body Shape Massage (focused on sculpting and contouring)Choose the category that best represents your strengths. This is your opportunity to showcase your best work in one clearly defined style. What is the competition schedule?
Each round will last 60 minutes, with a 30-minute setup time between rounds. All participants must arrive no later than 8:00 AM and remain until approximately 5:00 PM for the awards show. There will also be a 1 hour lunch break and lots of food options located within walking distance. Are there additional events before and after the competition?
Yes. The day before and the day after the championship—October 10 and October 12—will include optional events and continuing education opportunities at other locations. If possible, we recommend planning to stay for these days to take full advantage of world-class instruction and community connection. The evening before (october 10) we will also have a meet and greet event to enjoy a Hawaiian sunset and cocktails (location tbd)Important Rules and Reminders
All participants will give and receive one massage during the event. Non-English speaking therapists may bring a translator for briefings and announcements. Personal sponsorship clothing and cultural attire are allowed. Participants must bring their own linens, towels, and any tools they require. Massage recipients must be properly draped at all times, with underwear and chest coverings (for female models) required. No cameras or recordings are allowed during rounds. You are responsible for your own liability insurance during the event. Any inappropriate behavior or techniques of a sensual or sexual nature will result in immediate disqualification. Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulations are not allowed. The IMA will provide music during competition rounds. Every participant will receive a diploma of participation.
